A 23-year-old male visitor from Maryland tragically lost his life after being pulled from the waters at Kauapea Beach, also known as Secret Beach, on the afternoon of July 8th, 2024. Despite the best efforts of bystanders and emergency responders, the young man was pronounced dead early Tuesday morning at Wilcox Memorial Hospital.
At approximately 1:45 p.m., first responders were dispatched to Kauapea Beach following reports of an unresponsive swimmer. Bystanders initiated CPR until medics arrived and took over the advanced resuscitation efforts. Firefighters from the Hanalei Fire Station were on scene shortly after and continued these efforts. The patient was then transported from the beach to American Medical Response personnel, who provided advanced life support during the transfer to Wilcox Memorial Hospital. Despite these efforts, the victim succumbed to his condition and was pronounced dead the following day on July 9th.
Authorities have identified the victim but are withholding his name until next of kin have been notified. An autopsy is pending to determine the exact cause of death, although foul play is not suspected.
Kauapea Beach, near the North Shore town of Kilauea, is known for its beauty and seclusion but is also notorious for its strong currents, powerful waves and dangerous shoreline. Kauai Magazine recommends that visitors should never go in the water at this beach due to these conditions. Additionally, Kauapea Beach does not have lifeguards in the event of emergencies.
Criminal Investigations Division Lieutenant Anthony Morita emphasized the importance of safety, stating, “We extend our deepest condolences to the victim’s loved ones during this incredibly difficult time. This tragic loss reminds us of the potential dangers posed by our island’s waters. We urge all visitors and residents alike to exercise caution and be aware of the ocean’s unpredictable nature. Please heed all posted warnings and take necessary precautions to ensure your safety and the safety of those around you.”
