A 61-year-old visitor from California died Monday afternoon after being pulled from waters off Anini Beach Park, reports the County of Kauai.
According to county officials, first responders were dispatched to the scene shortly after 3:00 p.m. on October 6 following reports of a swimmer in distress. Witnesses said the man, later identified as Todd Wilt, experienced trouble while swimming and was assisted back to shore by bystanders before collapsing.
Lifeguards with the Ocean Safety Bureau immediately initiated CPR as paramedics arrived on scene. Wilt was transported to Samuel Mahelona Memorial Hospital, where medical personnel continued life-saving efforts. Despite their attempts, he was later pronounced dead.
An autopsy is pending to determine the exact cause of death, but officials say foul play is not suspected.
Anini Beach, known for its calm lagoon and protective reef, is a popular spot for swimming and snorkeling on Kauai’s North Shore. However, even in tranquil-looking waters, hidden currents and medical emergencies can turn dangerous within moments.
County officials remind both residents and visitors to always swim near lifeguards, stay aware of ocean conditions, and know their limits when entering the water.
This incident marks another somber reminder of the importance of ocean safety as Kauai continues to welcome visitors to its shores.
