Travelers planning to explore Kauai’s High Country, including Waimea Canyon and Kokee State Park, should take note of an extended road closure that will affect access to the Waimea Canyon area early this year.
According to the Hawaii Department of Transportation (HDOT), Waimea Canyon Drive (Route 550) will be fully closed on a daily basis between Panini Place and Kokee Road from Monday, January 5 through Friday, February 27, between the hours of 7:00 a.m. and 5:30 p.m.

The closure is required to allow contractors to complete pavement reconstruction and resurfacing along this stretch of roadway. HDOT notes that local traffic will still be allowed, but through traffic will not be able to pass during closure hours.
Detours to Waimea Canyon and Kokee
For visitors heading to Waimea Canyon or Kokee State Park, the planned closure means a mandatory detour via Kokee Road in Kekaha. While access to the canyon and park remains open, travelers should expect the alternate route to add a few extra miles and several additional minutes to their drive.
No Access to Red Dirt Falls During Closure
One important impact for sightseers: Visitors hoping to stop at Red Dirt Falls should be aware that the popular roadside waterfall sits directly within the affected section of Waimea Canyon Drive. As a result, Red Dirt Falls will not be accessible during the daily closure hours, from 7:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., throughout the construction period.
That said, access to Red Dirt Falls will still be possible outside of the closure window, including early mornings and late afternoons or evenings, when Waimea Canyon Drive is open. Travelers determined to see the falls can plan around the restricted hours, but should allow extra time and remain alert for changing road conditions as work continues.
Plan Ahead
Waimea Canyon and Kokee remain among Kauai’s most iconic destinations, offering sweeping views, cool mountain air, and some of the island’s best hiking. With a little advance planning—and patience for a short detour—visitors can still enjoy the area while important road improvements are completed.
For the latest updates or changes to the closure schedule, travelers are encouraged to monitor official County of Kauai and HDOT announcements.
