Hanalei Bay Lookout: The Wow Factor

On the drive from Princeville to Hanalei, there’s a small pullout that delivers one of Kauai’s most breathtaking views — the Hanalei Bay Lookout.

On Kauai’s lush North Shore, there’s a moment every visitor remembers — the instant they catch their very first panoramic view of Hanalei Bay. For those approaching from Princeville, that moment happens at the Hanalei Bay Lookout, a small roadside pullout perched just before the winding descent toward the Hanalei Bridge. From this elevated perch, Hanalei Bay stretches out in all its glory — layer upon layer of greenery backed by Hanalei’s dramatic mountains, with a shimmering bay that sparkles in the distance.

For first-timers, the epic view is almost incomprehensible. For local residents, the ever-changing scenery entertains and transitions throughout the day and into the sunset. In summer, the water often lies calm and glassy. In the winter, roiling swells create a mist that envelopes the bay. More mist, drifting over the mountain peaks after a passing rain, adds an otherworldly touch to the scene. Midday sees vivid greens and yellows that transition to teal and gold during the Golden Hour. Sunsets are always an out-of-this-world mystery. Will the sunset be silver, gold, pink, purple? If you’re lucky, there may be a rainbow arching over this grandeur as well. No matter the time, a quick stop always yields postcard-worthy shots.

The Hanalei Bay Lookout is located past the Princeville Center as you head towards Hanalei Bay. Just before you go down the hill towards the Hanalei Bridge (itself a gateway to the North Shore), there is a sharp curve in the road with room for a few vehicles to park on the right. Parking is limited, so pull in carefully and be courteous to others at the spot. Be sure to watch out for traffic as the shoulder is narrow and there are no barriers. When you are ready to leave, use caution as most oncoming traffic is not stopping for the view. Also, importantly, never attempt to access the parking area from the opposite side of the road (heading up the hill from Hanalei to Princeville).

The Hanalei Bay Lookout offers more than just a picture-perfect view — it’s an introduction to the heart and soul of Hanalei and Kauai’s North Shore. Down below lies a charming seaside town, a slow-paced haven of eateries, food trucks, surf shops and beach parks. But from up here, you get to pause and soak in the grandeur before descending into it.

Whether you’re headed for a day on the sand or simply passing through, the Hanalei Bay Lookout delivers a view that stays with you long after you’ve left. Sometimes, the best memories are the ones you didn’t plan for — the ones waiting quietly by the side of the road.
