The Iliau Nature Loop Trail, a 0.3-mile hiking trail that offers a gentle, introductory experience into the wonders of Kauai’s Waimea Canyon area, boasts a unique plant that can only be found on Kauai. The striking Iliau plant, with its Dr. Seuss-like visage, is the star attraction on this easy nature trail. The plant is an ancient member of the sunflower family and is a close relative of the silversword. In addition to the plant, the trail has nice views of Waimea Canyon and the tributary gorge Waialae Canyon.
This is the first trail that you will encounter when entering the Waimea Canyon area, and it’s the perfect “starter trail” for your adventures in the area. Though the trail is relatively short, bring water and use sunscreen when it’s hot and sunny. Rain can bring slippery conditions, so watch your step during wet conditions. Parking can be found alongside the roadway (Hwy 550) between mile markers 8 and 9. The trail head for the more difficult Kukui Trail, which goes to the bottom of Waimea Canyon, is on the nature loop.
