A 72-year-old visitor from Switzerland was airlifted from Hanakapiai Beach on Saturday after sustaining a head injury along the Kalalau Trail, according to the Kauai Fire Department.
Officials reported that emergency dispatchers received a call shortly after 11:30 a.m. about an injured hiker at the remote beach. Crews from the Lihue Fire Station, utilizing the Air 1 helicopter, were deployed to the scene.
First responders arrived at Hanakapiai Beach and located the hiker with an apparent head injury. On-scene personnel administered initial treatment to control bleeding before moving the visitor to the Hanakapiai Stream landing zone for evacuation.
The injured hiker was transported by helicopter to Princeville Airport and transferred to Hanalei firefighters and American Medical Response paramedics for further medical care. Emergency personnel cleared the scene by 1:20 p.m.
Known Hazards of Hanakapiai
Hanakapiai Beach, located two miles from the Kalalau Trailhead at Ke‘e Beach, is one of Kauai’s most scenic yet perilous destinations. The beach has a reputation for dangerous surf and powerful rip currents, and its isolation makes rescues difficult. Strong waves and rapidly changing conditions have contributed to multiple drownings at the site over the years.
The Kalalau Trail itself, a challenging 11-mile route along the Na Pali Coast, is often cited among the most dangerous hikes in the United States. Even the first two-mile section to Hanakapiai Beach requires careful footing and preparation, with steep drop-offs, slippery terrain, and unpredictable weather adding to the risks.
Emergency Response
The Kaua‘i Fire Department frequently conducts air rescues along the trail system. Officials continue to urge both residents and visitors to hike cautiously, respect warning signs, and be aware of their physical limits when venturing into Kauai’s remote wilderness.
