Nestled in the heart of Kilauea town on the North Shore of Kauai, the unassuming Kilauea Fish Market serves some of the best seafood on the island. The laid-back market, at the back of the town’s historic stone building, is a must-visit for anyone who loves seafood and wants to experience the best of island cuisine.

The catch-of-the-day was ahi and nairagi on our recent visit.
The market offers a nice selection of locally caught fish, including ahi, ono, opah, mahi mahi, swordfish and nairagi (striped marlin). There are usually at least two selections daily, depending on the catch. The catch-of-the-day fish are served in daily specials with white or brown rice and salad or potato mac. For a lunch plate, it doesn’t get much better than this.

Visitors can also choose from a variety of preparations, such as poke plates, keiki bowls, ahi wraps (popular), grilled plates and fish tacos. And if you’re not in the mood for fish, the market also offers a range of other dishes, including chicken and vegetarian options.
The Kilauea Fish Market has a casual atmosphere, with picnic tables set up outside where you can enjoy your meal while taking in the beautiful surroundings. It is the perfect place to relax and enjoy a delicious meal in a peaceful setting.

Orders are placed inside at the counter. Paying is quick and easy with a credit card reader. The food is prepared in view and a pager alerts you when your food is ready.
When you visit, patience can be a virtue. Food is usually served 10-15 minutes after ordering, but can take longer at peak times, especially around lunchtime. While you’re waiting, step around the corner to the Kauai Juice Co. for a refreshing bottle of juice to go along with your meal. It’s also worth noting that worker shortages are affecting many businesses on Kauai, and we have found that to be true with the Kilauea Fish Market as well. Infrequently, the fish market may open a little later, or close a little earlier than normal. Flexibility is the key to a happy time on the island.

Kilauea Lighthouse
While the Kilauea Fish Market is undoubtedly a culinary destination, don’t miss the opportunity to explore the enchanting surroundings of Kilauea. Just a short distance away lies the Kilauea Point National Wildlife Refuge, home to the iconic Kilauea Lighthouse. The refuge offers breathtaking coastal views and the chance to spot magnificent seabirds, including the Laysan albatross and wedge-tailed shearwater. The wildlife refuge and lighthouse are open Wednesday through Saturday, and the fish market is open on those days, so plan your visit to the area accordingly. The fish market is closed on Sundays.
The Kilauea Fish Market is more than just a place to satisfy your seafood cravings; it’s an experience that captures the essence of island living. With delicious, fresh seafood served in a relaxing setting, the market has become a favorite among locals and visitors alike. Whether you’re seeking a quick bite or a leisurely meal, the Kilauea Fish Market promises to leave you with lasting memories of genuine island life and authentic cuisine.
