Red-crested cardinals are delightful birds found throughout Hawaii, including on Kauai. Originally from South America, these birds were introduced to Hawaii in the 1930s and have since made themselves at home in the lush tropical environment. Sporting bright red plumage and distinctive crests, they bring vibrant color to the islands’ landscapes. With their cheerful chirps and lively presence, these charming creatures are a beloved part of Hawaii’s natural beauty, often seen flitting among trees or perched on branches. Particular fond of beaches, the red-crested cardinals in these images were photographed enjoying Kauai’s Hanalei Beach in May 2024.
