Smith’s Tropical Paradise Kauai

A Garden Retreat in the Wailua River Valley

Set in the lush Wailua River Valley on Kauai’s east side, Smith’s Tropical Paradise welcomes visitors into a vibrant 30-acre landscape of tropical gardens, cultural exhibits, and free-roaming birds. Just a short drive from the main highway, the garden offers a peaceful retreat from the everyday. With meandering walking paths, colorful blooms, and the graceful presence of peacocks, ducks, and chickens, this family-run attraction captures the natural beauty and diverse heritage of the Garden Isle.

More than a garden, Smith’s is an immersive experience. A mile-long network of walking paths leads through a kaleidoscope of tropical flora – towering bamboo, colorful flowering plants, and an expansive tropical orchard with over 20 types of fruit trees. Breadfruit, jackfruit, soursop, star fruit, and macadamia nuts all thrive here, offering a glimpse of the island’s rich agricultural heritage.

As you stroll the shaded pathways, you’ll likely find yourself in the company of Kauai’s most charming locals: the birds. Peacocks strut across the lawns, their iridescent tails fanned in full display. Ducks paddle through ponds and quiet streams. Chickens cluck and scratch beneath the trees, blending into the garden’s laid-back rhythm. Their presence adds a layer of life and authenticity to the already lush setting.

Birds, blooms, and beauty surround you at every turn in this enchanting Kauai destination.

Beyond the natural beauty, the garden highlights the cultural diversity of Hawaii with replicas of traditional Polynesian and Filipino homes and a serene Japanese garden complete with koi ponds and arching bridges. These cultural elements, surrounded by tropical splendor, make the space popular for weddings, photography, and peaceful reflection.

Many guests visit the gardens before attending the renowned Smith Family Garden Luau, a festive evening of Hawaiian music, storytelling, and island cuisine that celebrates the spirit of aloha. And some visit after Smith’s Fern Grotto River Cruise.
