Another Rescue at Makaleha Falls

First responders have conducted yet another rescue at Kauai’s remote Makaleha Falls. This is the second incident at the falls in the last eight days.

On Sunday, March 23rd, 2025, Kauai Fire Department personnel responded to a report of a hiker who was struck on the head by a falling rock and became unconscious at the falls. The injured hiker was discovered at the base of the falls, unconscious with labored heavy breathing and heavy bleeding from a head wound. Rescuers loaded the hiker into a stokes litter aboard the Air 1 helicopter and transported her to a landing zone near the Makaleha Falls trail head. There, firefighters and American Medical Response personnel took over the medical treatment and the injured hiker was transported to Wilcox Medical Center.

About a week prior, in the late afternoon of March 15th, the Kauai Fire Department received a report of five stranded hikers across a river on the Makaleha Trail, with water rising rapidly. While the five hikers managed to cross the river on their own, there was a report of two additional hikers stranded further down the trail. An Air 1 reconnaissance flight located the two hikers and hoisted them to safety using a short-haul system. Air 1 also located another couple struggling on the trail but they signaled they were okay and did not require assistance.

Makaleha Falls is a hidden gem located deep within the lush tropical rainforest of the Makaleha Mountains on the island’s northeastern side. This breathtaking waterfall is known for its multi-tiered cascade. The trail to Makaleha Falls can be treacherous and challenging, with slippery, muddy paths, dense foliage, and stream crossings that require careful navigation. The dense jungle surrounding the falls can make the trail difficult to follow, and the rugged terrain increases the risk of injury. Hikers should be prepared for sudden weather changes, as rain can make the trail even more hazardous. Moreover, at the waterfall, slippery surfaces, possible falling rocks and a turbulent waterfall plunge pool add to safety concerns. Overall, it’s crucial to exercise caution, wear appropriate footwear, and consider bringing a guide if unfamiliar with the area, as the remote location and demanding conditions make safety a top priority when exploring Makaleha Falls.
