Another Hiker Rescued on Kauai’s Kalalau Trail

Rescue crews were dispatched once again to Kauai’s Kalalau Trail on Friday afternoon, April 18th, 2025 to assist a distressed hiker, marking yet another incident on one of Hawaii’s most breathtaking – and physically demanding – hiking routes.

Shortly after 2:30 p.m., first responders received a report of a 67-year-old visitor from South Carolina experiencing distress near mile marker six. Personnel from the Lihue Fire Station responded via Air 1, locating the hiker at the Hanakoa Shelter.

The hiker was safely airlifted from the trail and transported to Princeville Airport. Upon landing, emergency personnel transferred the individual to the Hanalei Fire Station for further care.

Rescue underscores the importance of preparation on Kauai’s most demanding hike.

This marks the latest in a long string of rescues along the Kalalau Trail, a spectacular yet strenuous 11-mile route that stretches along Kauai’s remote Na Pali Coast. While the trail offers extraordinary views of lush valleys, towering sea cliffs, and turquoise waters, it also poses significant physical challenges – especially to those unprepared for the elevation changes, uneven terrain, narrow sections, heat and humidity, and rapidly changing weather conditions. During wet weather, certain sections become slick and hazardous, with flash floods capable of trapping hikers between streams.

Rescues from the Kalalau Trail are not uncommon. Each year, dozens of hikers are evacuated due to injuries, heat-related illnesses, or flash flooding. In some cases, stranded hikers have spent nights exposed to the elements before help could reach them.

The increasing number of rescues has raised concerns among first responders and officials about both public safety and the burden on emergency resources.

For those who are properly prepared – physically, mentally, and logistically – the Kalalau Trail remains one of Kauai’s most unforgettable adventures. But it demands respect. Proper gear preparation, appropriate footwear, plenty of water, knowledge of the weather forecast, and an honest assessment of one’s physical fitness are all essential before attempting the hike.

As the island continues to welcome visitors eager to explore its legendary landscapes, the message is clear: when it comes to the Kalalau Trail, preparation isn’t just recommended – it’s vital.
