Lifeguards and Kauai Fire Department personnel rescued five individuals in waters off Kealia Beach on Sunday, July 9th, 2023 reports the County of Kauai.
Shortly before 4:50 p.m., Kauai Police Department Dispatch reported swimmers in distress in waters off Kealia Beach. Personnel with the Kaiakea fire station, Ocean Safety Bureau, Rescue 3, and American Medical Response responded to the incident.
When firefighters arrived on the scene, they found a lifeguard assisting two swimmers near Kealia Point and another two lifeguards rescuing three swimmers outside the river mouth. Working together, the lifeguards and firefighters used rescue tubes to bring the swimmers back to shore.
Four residents were admitted to Wilcox Medical Center, with one in critical condition, one in serious condition, and two in stable condition. A fifth individual, described as a Good Samaritan, declined medical treatment.
Kealia Beach in Kapaa is one of the island’s most popular beaches, with consistent waves that attract both local residents and visitors.
