A full-scale search and rescue drill is set for April 30th, 2025 at Port Allen Harbor, involving multiple Kauai agencies and the U.S. Coast Guard. The public is asked to stay clear of the training.
A full-scale search and rescue exercise (SAREX) will take place on Tuesday, April 30th, 2025 from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Port Allen Small Boat Harbor and the nearby waters off Hanapepe, reports the County of Kauai.
The training, led by the United States Coast Guard, is a coordinated effort with the County of Kauai and several partner agencies. The goal is to simulate a real maritime emergency and strengthen interagency response.
Participating agencies include the U.S. Coast Guard, Kauai Fire Department, Kauai Police Department, Ocean Safety Bureau, Kauai Emergency Management Agency, Kauai Search and Rescue, and the Hawaii Department of Land and Natural Resources.
“Full-scale exercises are invaluable training tools that allow us to simulate maritime emergencies in a realistic yet controlled environment,” stated Cmdr. Kyra Dykeman, deputy commander, Coast Guard Sector Honolulu. “These scenarios challenge our teams, test our procedures, and most importantly, deepen our coordination with partners. Every opportunity to collaborate strengthens our collective readiness and ensures a more unified, effective response when real-world incidents occur.”
Officials are asking for the public’s cooperation by staying clear of marked areas and any vehicles, equipment and personnel associated with the exercise.
