Visitors to Gillins Beach enjoy the privacy provided by the treeline that is set very near the water. The shaded nooks are perfect for relaxing, while the beach is a sunbathing and beachcombing paradise. The waves here are typically stronger that at nearby Poipu Beach, making it less suitable for swimming. However, the presence of a reef provides some protection and offers decent snorkeling and wading opportunities. Whether you’re relaxing in the shade, soaking up the sun, or simply listening to the rhythmic crash of waves, it’s easy to lose track of time here.

The off-the-grid beach is also a haven for wildlife. Hawaiian monk seals are often present, and if you look closely, the water is teeming with green sea turtles.

This slice of heaven is mostly uncrowded due to its remote setting. Access requires either navigating a bumpy dirt road or trekking along the scenic Mahaulepu Trail. If driving, continue on Poipu Road past the Grand Hyatt Kauai, where it becomes a dirt road. Follow the road past CJM Country Stables and then take a right towards the Makauwahi Cave Reserve. There is parking for the beach near the cave area, with the beach just a short walk away. A four-wheel-drive is recommended for this oft-muddy and bumpy jaunt, but we’ve seen plenty of regular cars make the trip as well. To hike to Gillins Beach, take the two-mile Mahaulepu Trail along the coast starting at the Grand Hyatt Kauai. Bring plenty of water and sun protection as this area is somewhat sunnier and hotter than other parts of Kauai.

NOTE: The road to Gillins Beach is on private land owned by Grove Farm. The road has a gate that is only open 8AM to 6PM. You will need to keep this in mind on your visit so that you do not get stuck behind the gate.
