The Hawaii State Legislature has passed Senate Bill 1511 to help preserve the safety and natural beauty of Hanalei Bay, located on the north shore of Kauai. The bill prohibits vessels longer than 75 feet from entering Hanalei Bay, with exceptions for federal, state, or county-operated vessels. The Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR) would be responsible for defining the boundaries of Hanalei Bay and enforcing the new vessel size restrictions.
The legislation is in response to a growing number of large vessels, including yachts and ships, mooring in Hanalei Bay, posing a risk to the health and safety of individuals and families participating in ocean activities in the bay. Hanalei Bay, the centerpiece of Kauai’s North Shore, is cherished by residents and visitors alike for its exquisite natural beauty and recreational opportunities such as surfing, swimming and standup paddleboarding.
The bill now awaits Governor Josh Green’s signature to become law. If signed, the vessel restrictions will take effect immediately.
“Our community has spoken loud and clear. Hanalei Bay is a treasure, and this bill is a critical step in preserving the natural beauty of this scenic bay, while protecting residents’ access to fishing, swimming, surfing, and traditional water activities.” said House Speaker Nadine K. Nakamura.
