Taking the bus on Kauai just got easier. The Kauai Bus has launched a new tap-and-ride system that lets riders pay with a smartphone app or a reloadable smartcard called Holomua. No more buying tickets ahead of time – just tap and go.
The new Account-Based Ticketing (ABT) system is powered by Masabi’s Justride platform. It follows the launch of mobile ticketing earlier this year and is part of a larger plan to modernize bus travel on the island.
“This launch is a major step forward in our mission to make public transportation on Kauai easier, more accessible, and more modern,” said Mayor Derek S.K. Kawakami.
With the app or smartcard, the system will automatically charge the best price for the day or month through something called fare capping. Riders don’t need to worry about choosing the right fare – they’ll always get the best deal.
Fares include:
- Single Ride: $2.00 (adult), $1.00 (reduced fare)
- Day Pass: $5.00 (adult), $2.50 (reduced fare)
- Monthly Cap: $50.00 (adult), $25.00 (reduced fare)
Riders can manage their account online or in the app, where they can add funds and track rides. Those without smartphones can use the Holomua card, which works the same way and can be reloaded with cash at select locations.
In late 2025, The Kauai Bus will also add Open Payments, letting riders pay directly with credit cards or mobile wallets.
“We’re delighted to deepen our partnership with The Kauai Bus supporting the roll out Account-Based Ticketing and bringing smarter, more efficient payment options to riders,” said Masabi CEO Brian Zanghi.
