Kauai, the Garden Isle of Hawaii, is a magnet for travelers seeking natural beauty, adventure, and relaxation. As you plan your getaway to this enchanting island, one of the key decisions you’ll face is where to stay. Fortunately, Kauai offers a diverse array of accommodations to suit every taste and budget, ensuring that every traveler finds their perfect home away from home.

Hotels

Kauai boasts an impressive selection of hotels catering to various preferences and budgets. Poipu, on Kauai’s sunny southern side, has a number of resort-style hotels, including the impressive Grand Hyatt Kauai and the romantic Ko’a Kea Resort. In Lihue, the Royal Sonesta Kauai and Marriott’s Kauai Beach Club preside over peaceful Kalapaki Beach. Family-friendly hotels can be found on Kauai’s Coconut Coast in Wailua and Kapaa. Kauai’s North Shore has just one traditional resort hotel – 1 Hotel Hanalei Bay – the former St. Regis Princeville Resort that has been reimagined as an eco-friendly luxury destination. Hotel choices are also few on Kauai’s West Side, with just a couple of basic hotels in Waimea.

Vacation Rentals (VRBO and Airbnb)

For those seeking a more personalized and flexible accommodation experience, vacation rentals through platforms like VRBO and Airbnb offer a wealth of options, from small condos to grand estates. Condominiums are a popular choice for accommodations on Kauai, particularly for families or larger groups. Combining the comforts of home with resort-like amenities, condos often offer more spacious living areas, fully-equipped kitchens, and access to pools, spas, and fitness centers. Though, as mentioned above, hotel options are few on Kauai’s North Shore, there are a plethora of condos and houses available for rent in Princeville through VRBO and Airbnb. Poipu, also, is a hotspot for condo and house rentals.

Bed and Breakfast

There are very few traditional “bed and breakfast” accommodations on Kauai. Marjorie’s Kauai Inn in Lawai (near Poipu) is perhaps the best-known bed and breakfast. Below are a few of the accommodations on Kauai that have bed and breakfast type amenities.

Beach Camping

The Kauai Department of Parks & Recreation issues camping permits for the following beaches. Currently, there are only four beaches with beach camping. Beach camping is no longer offered at popular beaches such as Haena Beach and Hanalei Beach.

  • Anini Beach Park
  • Anahola Beach Park
  • Lydgate Park Campground
  • Salt Pond Park

State Parks

State campgrounds are administered separately. Click on the following links for more information.

Vehicle Camping

Recently, vehicle camping has become a thing on Kauai as some private individuals and small businesses are now renting their camping-equipped vehicles, some with rooftop tents. Unfortunately, the places where you can “car camp” is limited on the island. Hawaii State Parks, for example, does not allow sleeping in vehicles in campground parking lots.
