The Koloa History Center is a small, open-air exhibit in Old Koloa Town on Kauai that invites visitors to step back in time for a glimpse at the island’s sugar plantation past. It was in Koloa, in 1835, that the first successful sugar plantation in the Hawaiian Islands was established – an event that would forever shape the economy, demographics, and culture of Kauai and the Hawaiian Islands.

The center contains various historical artifacts, including a barber chair and sewing machine. The center’s most interesting item might be the June 1919 map of Kauai hanging on the wall. Overall, there’s really not that much to take in at the center, but it’s worth a look if you are in the area. Though small, the center embodies the town’s greater historical elements. Old Koloa Town has preserved much of its original character, with historic plantation-style buildings that now house small shops, eateries, and galleries. More than a dozen town buildings have informational placards with historical accounts, turning a simple walk down the main street into a living history tour.
