The Kuilau Ridge Trail offers hikers a beautiful journey into the heart of Kauai’s lush rainforest and stunning mountain landscapes. Located in the eastern part of the island, this 1.75-mile trail is known for its easy difficulty rating and panoramic views of valleys, ridges, and distant peaks. A favorite among locals and visitors alike, Kuilau Ridge combines accessibility with the island’s signature tropical beauty.

Getting There and Starting Out

The Kuilau Ridge Trail begins just before the Keahua Arboretum, an easy 20-minute drive from the town of Wailua. There is parking for about four vehicles at the trail head, with more parking available at the arboretum. (The arboretum itself is worth a stop, with its serene setting of exotic trees, including rainbow eucalyptus, whose multi-colored bark adds a splash of color to the tropical surroundings.) As you start on the trail, you’ll find a gentle incline that gradually ascends the ridge, taking you into a more remote part of Kauai’s eastern interior.

The Journey

As you make your way up the ridge, the trail offers a mix of shaded forest areas and open viewpoints. Early on, you’ll pass through groves of native plants, including koa and ohia trees. As you continue along the path, you’ll encounter sweeping views of the island’s verdant valleys and towering mountain ranges, especially on clear days. Birdsong fills the air, and the atmosphere is often cool and moist, thanks to the rainforest canopy.

Scenic Overlook and Picnic Spot

Just before the 2-mile mark, you’ll reach a scenic picnic area, offering expansive views over the valleys and ridges below. This spot, marked by a wooden bench and shelter, is perfect for a rest or lunch break. Nearby, the Kuilau Ridge Trail connects to the Moalepe Trail, an opportunity for hikers looking for a longer adventure. However, many choose this picnic area as a turnaround point, enjoying the cool breezes and unbeatable views.
