A true hidden gem on Kauai, Moloaa Beach is tucked away at the end of a lush tropical drive on the island’s northeastern shore between the towns of Anahola and Kilauea. Less known and less visited than some other area beaches, Moloaa Beach is the perfect escape for those seeking solitude in a stunning natural setting. Moloaa Beach is a favorite destination for local residents and families, fishermen, visitors from nearby rental properties and a few tourists who find their way to this exquisite paradise. For more than a few, Moloaa Beach is their favorite beach on the island.
The beach, situated at breathtaking Moloaa Bay, is characterized by its golden sand, rocky outcroppings and verdant hills that frame this remarkable location.
Relaxing on the beach, picnicking, fishing and beachcombing are some of the favorite activities at Moloaa Beach. Rocky outcroppings, both in the water and on the beach, make the beach mostly unsuitable for water sports such as bodyboarding and surfing. Moreover, despite the protected bay, waves are often a little rougher here, a characteristic of beaches in the area. If you do swim here, don’t go too far out.
Several condos are located right above the sand, which is rare on Kauai. Search VRBO and Airbnb to find condos and houses for rent in the area.
Beyond the northern section of the beach is a short coastal trail that leads towards Larsens Beach. Nesting grounds for seabirds can be found in the trees above the trail, an area that should not be disturbed.
There is a limited amount of parking on the sides of Moloaa Road near the beach. Several years ago, these parking spots were enough. Now, with the fame of Moloaa Beach spreading, the parking situation is often problematic, especially on the weekends when local residents are more apt to visit. Do not park in the condos area near the beach or in front of gates or driveways along the road.
To get to the beach from the parking area, just walk towards the condos on the road.
You can either walk between the condos to get to the south end of the beach or walk to the end of the road for the mouth of Moloaa Stream and the north end of the beach.
Gilligan’s Island Beach
Just sit right back and you’ll hear a tale…
Moloaa Beach was used as a filming location in 1963 for the pilot and first episode of Gilligan’s Island, and can be seen in the opening credits.
