REAL ID Deadline Approaching: What Kauai Residents Need to Know Before May 7, 2025

If you plan to fly domestically after May 7, 2025, now is the time to make sure you’re ready. The deadline to obtain a REAL ID-compliant Hawaii driver’s license or state identification card is quickly approaching, and County of Kauai officials are urging residents to act early to avoid last-minute delays.

Under federal law, every person boarding a commercial flight within the United States will be required to show a REAL ID credential or another TSA-accepted form of identification starting on that date. Without one, you may be denied boarding.

How to Know if You Have a REAL ID

REAL ID-compliant credentials are easy to spot. In Hawaii, they are marked with a white star inside a gold circle on the front of your license or ID card. If you don’t see that symbol, your card is not REAL ID compliant.

Why It Matters

The REAL ID Act was passed by Congress in 2005 as part of a nationwide effort to strengthen identification standards after the recommendations of the 9/11 Commission. The law sets minimum security standards for state-issued IDs and bars federal agencies – including the TSA – from accepting non-compliant cards.

To help residents understand the process, the County of Kauai has published a video tutorial on how to apply for a REAL ID credential. You can find it on the county’s website at:

Appointments at the DMV are highly encouraged to avoid long lines. While walk-ins are accepted as time permits, booking ahead is the best way to ensure you’re seen in a timely manner.

Stay Informed

While May 7, 2025 is the current federal deadline, officials recommend checking the Kauai DMV website for any changes or updates that may arise.
