A leisurely afternoon at Anini Beach Park turned tragic on Friday, May 24th, 2024 when David Kositsky, a 70-year-old visitor from Washington, was pulled unresponsive from the waters. Despite the valiant efforts of first responders, Kositsky was later pronounced dead at Samuel Mahelona Memorial Hospital.
The incident unfolded around noon when Kositsky, who had been snorkeling, was reported missing by his friends. Concerned for his safety, they alerted lifeguards from the Ocean Safety Bureau. Promptly responding to the emergency, lifeguards located Kositsky and brought him to shore.
Once on land, immediate resuscitation efforts began. Lifeguards administered CPR in a desperate attempt to revive him. Medics arrived shortly thereafter, taking over with advanced resuscitation techniques. Despite their best efforts, Kositsky could not be revived.
Kositsky was transported to Samuel Mahelona Memorial Hospital, where he was officially pronounced dead. An autopsy is pending to determine the exact cause of death, though authorities have stated that foul play is not suspected.
