Tucked away at the far end of Hanalei Bay is an exotically beautiful beach that most tourists unknowingly drive right past. Set below the highway as it rises past the town of Hanalei, Waikoko Beach offers a stunning escape with the ultimate tropical setting. Large trees that back the golden sand provide plenty of seclusion and shade for relaxation, and offshore, a substantial reef and a row of rocks create a calm cove for leisurely water activities. The advantageous location provides an all-encompassing view of spectacular Hanalei Bay. Hanalei’s majestic mountains add to the awe-inspiring panorama, painting a scene straight out of a postcard.
Limited parking along the side of Kuhio Highway keeps visitors to a minimum at Waikoko Beach. There are spots for only about 8 vehicles in a pullout. Additional parking can be found just up the road at the curve in the parking area for Lumahai Beach (east end). However, the parking area for Lumahai Beach is also limited, especially during the day.
From the parking area, there are a couple of steep and generally unsafe paths down to the beach. A better option is to walk east on the side of the highway about 100 feet to the end of the rock wall where you will find a better path. Watch out for oncoming traffic during the walk!
After navigating under some low-hanging trees near the shoreline, you will soon come upon the main section of Waikoko Beach, and you will not be disappointed with the golden sand and clear cove. In the above and below photos you can clearly see the rocks and reef that create the cove. The shallow, sandy cove is the perfect place to wade in for a refreshing dip.
Palm trees provide plenty of shade at Waikoko Beach. Picnics and hanging out are favorite activities at this mesmerizing spot.
