Haena Beach (Haena Beach Park), located on the rugged and picturesque north shore of Kauai, is a destination that epitomizes the raw beauty of Hawaii. Known for its golden sands, turquoise waters, and lush mountain backdrop, this beach offers visitors an unforgettable experience of tranquility and natural splendor.
With a combination of uncommon natural beauty and a peaceful setting, the beach is our favorite on the island.
Whether you’re seeking relaxation or adventure, Haena Beach has something to offer. The beach is ideal for sunbathing, picnicking, beachcombing and snorkeling. Fronting the golden sand is a green, grassy beach park that is perfect for hanging out. Ensconced in the shadow of Makana Mountain, the park is a serene retreat ideal for contemplation, meditation and daydreaming. The beach itself is a favorite spot for both locals and visitors seeking sun and fun amidst extreme beauty. Offshore, clear waters beckon snorkelers to explore vibrant coral reefs teeming with marine life.
For photographers, Haena Beach is a dream setting. Golden sand, Windex-colored water, a lush backdrop and fiery sunsets come together for a dramatic and picturesque scene.
Advanced surfers flock here to test their skills on the powerful breaks, while kitesurfers take advantage of strong offshore winds to fly like a bird. For those less inclined to brave the waves and wind, simply watching the surfers from the shore can be an exhilarating experience.
While Haena Beach is a perfect spot for sunbathing and picnicking, its waters demand respect. Ocean conditions can be unpredictable, especially during the winter months when strong currents and large waves are common. In addition to potentially rough waters, other dangers potentially lurk. This is the beach where pro surfer Bethany Hamilton lost her arm to a shark. Visitors are advised to check local conditions and heed warnings from lifeguards.
Be sure to stay for the sunset at Haena Beach, where Makana Mountain (Bali Hai) is backlit by fiery skies.
Adjoining Haena Beach is the famed Tunnels Beach, renowned for its extensive coral reef that is a bucket-list destination for many snorkelers. To the left and around the corner is Cannons Beach, a mostly-deserted stretch of sand that beckons a peaceful stroll. The Maniniholo Dry Cave, across the street from the park, invites exploration and adds an air of mystique to the location.
Haena Beach is the farthest beach on Kauai’s North Shore that you can visit without a permit. (Ke’e Beach, the farthest beach, unfortunately now requires a permit.) The parking lot fills up quickly at Haena Beach Park. Your best opportunities to find a parking place are early in the morning and in the late afternoon (after 4PM). Otherwise, in the middle of the day, you will be waiting in a line of cars and jockeying for position for the next available spot. Often, there is a food truck and vendors in the parking lot.
At one time (before COVID), camping was allowed at the beach on certain days, but that is no longer the case.
Final Thoughts
Haena Beach is a true Kauai treasure, offering a harmonious blend of recreation and natural beauty. Whether you’re marveling at the crystal-clear water, or simply soaking in the breathtaking mountain backdrop, a visit to Haena Beach is sure to leave you with lasting memories and a deep connection to the beauty of Hawaii’s Garden Isle.
