Hanakapiai Beach on Kauai is a slice of paradise waiting to be discovered. Surrounded by tropical mountains and lush greenery, its golden sands stretch out to meet the Windex-colored waters of the Pacific Ocean. Accessible only via a hike on the first two miles of the Kalalau Trail, the journey to this secluded beach is as breathtaking as the destination itself. Once there, visitors can relax on the shore, listen to the soothing sounds of the waves, or explore the natural wonders of the coastline.

Upon arrival at the beach, you will have to cross the Hanakapiai Stream to reach the main part of the beach. Some visitors just wade right through the shallow stream while others rock hop. And others follow the stream to the beach where access to the entire beach is easier. The stream should only be crossed during calm conditions. Do not attempt to cross if the current is too strong, as you could be swept out to sea in dangerous waters.

A shallow sea cave can be found on the western end of the beach during summer months. In winter months, the sea cave disappears below the winter surf conditions. A shallow lagoon, behind the primary beach, is often present and is perfect for wading and cooling off. Above the beach is a row of weathered beach rocks that must be navigated to reach the beach.

Visitors should never go in the water at Hanakapiai Beach, as the surf is known for its powerful and often dangerous currents. A makeshift sign near the entrance to the beach marks the many fatalities that have occurred here.

Hanakapiai Beach not only offers a stunning beach escape but also the opportunity for further exploration and discovery. Beyond the beach lies another adventure: a two-mile hike inland leads to the towering Hanakapiai Falls. This trek takes you through lush rainforest, across the Hanakapiai Stream, and finally to the majestic waterfall, where the cascading waters plunge into a tranquil and refreshing pool below. And continuing on the Kalalau Trail towards Kalalau Beach requires a separate camping permit for the Na Pali Coast State Wilderness Park.
