Injured Hiker Rescued in Kokee

On Sunday, May 19th, 2024, first responders from the Kauai Fire Department (KFD) successfully rescued a 43-year-old female visitor from West Virginia who sustained an injury while hiking in Kokee State Park.

KFD personnel from the Waimea Fire Station and Rescue 3, aboard the helicopter Air 1, responded to the incident after receiving a report of an injured hiker on the Kukui Trail shortly before 12:20 p.m. According to a preliminary report, the hiker suffered an apparent ankle injury from a fall.

Upon arrival, Rescue 3 found the injured woman on the Kukui Trail and promptly performed a short-haul extraction, transporting her to a landing zone near the trailhead. There, medics from American Medical Response (AMR) were on standby to continue her treatment. After initial care at the scene, she was transported to Kauai Veterans Memorial Hospital for further medical attention.

The rescue operation was efficiently executed, with the scene cleared by approximately 1:35 p.m. Thanks to the swift response and coordination between KFD and AMR, the injured hiker received timely medical care and was safely evacuated from the trail.

KFD officials remind hikers to exercise caution while exploring trails, as the terrain can be challenging and accidents may occur.
